думаю, ставить софт из исходников имеет смысл лишь тогда, когда необходимо указать дополнительные опции, которые отсутствуют в собранном пакете по-умолчанию, либо если версия в репозитории дистрибутива устаревшая, а надо во что бы то ни стало свежую. в противном случае, я бы попробовал apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get install network-manager
таким образом из исходников ставить софт я вобще никому не рекомендую, а то получится как в слаке - "файловая помойка начинается с /" (с). Для указания дополнительных опций компилинья можно и менеджер пакетов юзать, все нормальные это умеют делать.
собственно.. я и писал что нет смысла ставить из сорцов, когда есть в репозитории и нет крайней необходимости извращаться..
