Только на PHP невозможно сделать. PHP выполняется на сервере, а DOM создаётся в браузере. Если всё таки нужно взаимодействовать с элементами на PHP, то это можно реализовать через AJAX. С помощью JavaScript можно получить данные о элементе, отправить на сервер, получить ответ и опять на JavaScript осуществить нужные действия с элементом. ну, вообще-то вполне себе возможно, если речь идёт о прасинге, например можно использовать стандартные средства, такие как http://php.net/manual/ru/class.domdocument.php, а можно что-нибудь продвинутее для работы через CSS селекторы, например https://github.com/tj/php-selector
Парсинг не позволяет изменить элемент, а DOMDocument только представляет файл в виде DOM объектов. Но самой DOM ещё нет, она создаётся уже в браузере. Соответственно, PHP может только иметь представление о том, как страница должна выглядеть изначально, но он не имеет доступа к реальной станице, которая может значительно измениться.
